Skin packaging is a new type of express packaging method, but some skin packaging uses cardboard, while others use skin film. Let's get familiar with the differences between cardboard and skin film.

Let's first talk about the method using cardboard. Since the cardboard used in skin packaging has certain requirements for supporting the packaged items, the cardboard used must have excellent toughness and not be easily crushed. Skin packaging actually works by vacuuming the cardboard, removing all the air around the packaged item. This allows the high-transparency and good stretch-performance plastic film to closely adhere between the product and the cardboard. Therefore, the cardboard used in skin packaging must have good breathability. To enhance the "shelf" effect, colorful patterns and text must be printed on the cardboard, so the cardboard also needs excellent color reproduction and printing performance. Additionally, the cardboard needs to have a certain strength. Of course, skin packaging can also choose not to use cardboard, but instead use skin film boards or plywood and other relatively hard materials. As long as all the air under the skin film covering part is completely vacuumed, creating a full vacuum state, the skin film process is simpler, only requiring the baseboard materials to be fused together. However, the effect and shelf impact produced this way are far inferior to packaging with cardboard. Skin film packaging can choose from various films.

 Skin Film

For example, we can choose to use polyethylene film, ethylene-vinyl acetate film, polyvinyl chloride film, polystyrene film, and films made from ionomer resin processing and composite films. So far, the three most used skin films are PVC film, ionomer resin film, and LDPE/EVA co-extruded composite film. From performance comparisons, we can see that LDPE/EVA co-extruded film has a fatal weakness in skin packaging: transparency deviation. Although it has a high storage rate, it causes large cardboard curling and large heat sealing tests, which affect the packaging effect. PVC film has poor low-temperature performance, ages easily, has poor puncture resistance and stretchability, which greatly limits its use in skin packaging. Moreover, recycling is a major problem. Due to severe environmental pollution, many Western European countries have strictly banned its use. Therefore, products packaged with PVC film cannot enter the Western European market. Of course, ionomer film is relatively more expensive than PVC because this material has good toughness and strength, which can reduce thickness and unit area weight to some extent, but it does not reduce cost. It is currently a very good skin film used in skin packaging.
